I enjoy reading letters selected by the editor for printing in the Independent Record. Not all letters submitted are printed. Some letters contain factual errors which should be corrected. As the letter writer mentioned in Mr. Clothier’s most recent letter (the one who actually read his first letter), I must state that nowhere in my response to his first letter did I mention, as he put it, “every thing from athletes foot to dandruff and everything in between was the fault of liberal foolishness.” I guess Mr. Clothier was attempting to be humor...
I read with amusement Mr. Clothier’s recent column detailing many of the wonderful things that “idealistic progressives” have put upon the country. Some are good and were needed. I am the beneficiary of the Social Security and Medicare programs, having dutifully participated (since the law required it) by contributing parts of my paychecks since 1966 to those programs. As of this weekend, members of at least 16 teams – fully one-half of the NFL – have protested during the playing of the national anthem, by sitting, kneeling, eating, or raising a clenched fist. I am intrigued by Hanes W. Hall’s letter, putting forth the concept of the possibility of the imposition of “martial law” by the president. Seems to be another unfounded (and confounding as well) conspiracy theory from a particular political party. Referencing the recent Rex’s Ramblings column, it’s obvious on which side of the political aisle he stands. It’s obvious that the author still reads from the tired old Democrat playbook - the one Democrats relied on to defeat President-Elect Trump (oops, that didn’t work for them, did it?). I don’t argue with Cindy Glasson’s statistics in her column titled Wyoming, The Equality State. I do believe there’s a gender gap in pay between men and women. Statistics can be misleading. I’ve heard it said, for example, that two economists can analyze the same set of data (statistics) and come to opposite conclusions. The Ask Around opinion article by April S. Kelley in the latest IR issue leaves no doubt as to which side of the fence she stands. There is no better example of the differences in ideology between the “common folk,” and those elected or appointed to serve those common folk, than the recent dispute about use (abuse) of the town dump. I reference two front page articles in the IR concerning this issue, one on Aug. 4 and the other on Aug. 18. Regarding Duane Richter's letter, I do not argue with or dispute anyone's religious beliefs. I do believe that religion and science are not mutually exclusive. Well, it seems there is at least one unhappy person in our community, someone who leads such a melancholy life that he/she can only attain satisfaction by spreading his/her misery to others, including our local businesses.
