In June of 1945, a grove of more than 20 green ash trees were planted roughly where Hot Springs County Library stands today. While many of the trees are gone, the larger green ashes that remain could be part of that original grove. However, beyond just adding some greenery to the town, that grove was planted in memoriam of the soldiers from Hot Springs County who died in World War II. The cross country runners had some difficulty last Friday at the 3A East Regional Meet at the golf course. Coach Stephanie Metz said the Bobcats had some bad times, but so did the other teams. The team had some other issues as well, with one runner losing a shoe and another forgetting spikes. The team also has a new, inexperienced runner. Hot Springs County Football raised their record to 3-4 for the season with a 24-20 win over Burns Friday night. Coach Matt McPhie said, “Our boys got a good road win on Friday night. We battled some injuries and adversity but stayed the course, and fought it out.” On offense, McPhie said, the team was led by Logan Cole, Jon Harvey, and Cullen Becher. This year marks the fifth that the school is providing the service. Secretary Brenda Cornwell said the leaf raking is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27. On Saturday, the Thermopolis Middle School Bobcats took a 44-28 win against Greybull, capping off a perfect 7-0 season. Regarding Saturday's game, coach Shane Corpening said it was a pretty "back and forth" game, the biggest thing was for the players to pick themselves up as a team and ride through the low points while riding the momentum changes. As October moves on, it's hard not to think of Halloween and the decorations that come with it, many of which are pumpkin-based. Gene Peterson got a surprise when he planted pumpkins this year, putting down 12-20 plants and seeds in some manure he got from the Hot Springs County Fairgrounds.
