One of the more popular recreational sports one can play is Pickleball. John Brooks describes the game as something like a smaller version of Tennis or an enlarged Ping Pong match. During the regular monthly meeting of Hot Springs Travel and Tourism, Director Amanda Moeller reported they had received another high deposit of lodging tax receipts for the 2017-18 fiscal year. The May deposit was $12,890.73, compared to $7,913.54 this time last fiscal year. The deposit put the receipts for the fiscal year at five percent, or $8,460.29, higher than this time last year. During a recent meeting of the Thermopolis Town Council, Travel and Tourism Director Amanda Moeller said she did some paperwork for the State of Wyoming a couple months ago regarding opportunity zones, noting the town of Thermopolis was recommended by the governor to be such a zone. Monday in Hot Springs District Court, Holly Herrera was sentenced to three to five years in prison on each of three counts of child endangerment — exposure to methamphetamine — and one year on a charge of second-offense possession of methamphetamine. The body of 66-year-old David E. Cathey was found at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 3 in the Sand Draw area around Gebo. According to information from the Hot Springs County Sheriff’s Office, Cathey’s body appeared to have been there about five to seven days before it was discovered, and an autopsy showed the cause of death was exposure. Though Friday saw the final regular season meet for the Hot Springs County High School Track and Field team with the Bobcat Invite, it was the first meet in which Cullen Becher was able to compete, having been released to do so. Becher underwent some minor knee surgery earlier this year. Around town, particularly in the alleyways, strips of ground are turning blue-green as spraying is done for weeds. May is Foster Care Month, and Kristie Collins, the foster care coordinator with the Department of Family Services (DFS), said there are 13 or 14 homes that provide foster care in Thermopolis. Tuesday evening at the Thermopolis Town Council meeting, Travel and Tourism Director Amanda Moeller presented a report on how Hot Springs County did in 2017. The county saw 88,000 overnight visitors, which was a bit down from the 97,000 the previous year, Moeller said, a surprise considering the eclipse. This past week saw McKenna Bomengen winning a third place medal in the 3200 meters at the Wyoming Track Classic (WTC) in Casper. Coach Ernie Mecca explained simply qualifying for the WTC is a major accomplishment, as it means Bomengen is among the top 10 performers in all classes across the state. Merit won the Hot Springs County Recreation District Adult Co-ed Basketball Championship with a 47-33 victory over Vicklund Pharmacy.
