Last weekend, the Bobcat Robotics teams Fist Full of Axles and Aluminati travelled to Casper to compete in the Wyoming State Championship. Aluminati was seated in 22nd place, while Fist Full of Axles was seated at 16th. Following a bench trial Friday, Judge Robert E. Skar found Paul Mathewson guilty of fraud against a government record. According to the charge, on June 23 a bond conditions form was provided for Mathewson to sign, with a set amount of $2,000. The “cash” box on the bond was marked, indicating the bond was to be paid in cash; no other boxes were marked. A trio of Thermopolis Middle School students will compete at the State Spelling Bee at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs following competition at TMS Friday. Seventeen students were selected to compete in the spelling bee based on their written test scores. The Thermopolis-Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce met briefly Thursday evening, prior to their Christmas party. Among the proceedings was the vote for the 2016 Business, Citizen and Non-Profit Organization, and Chamber Executive Director Meri Ann Rush noted they had a past president, Reg Filkey, participate in this year’s voting. The JV and freshmen boys basketball teams took on Worland on their home court Thursday, and were at Buffalo Friday. An appeal in a case against Anthony Haire is being taken under advisement in the Wyoming Supreme Court, with a written decision expected at a later date. Oral arguments have been heard by Supreme Court justices, as well as counsel for Haire and the State of Wyoming. Following a four-day trial in December 2015, Haire was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment. On Jan. 20 in the United States District Court of Wyoming, Darrel Demas, 27, and Justin Dvorak, 30, formerly of Thermopolis, were sentenced to prison terms for providing heroin which resulted in the death of Alexander Herdt in Thermopolis.
