    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Jan 11, 2018

As you can imagine, discipline within the school system has changed enormously, going from corporal punishment (spanking) to a more meaningful removal of privileges (no activities) and opportunities to bring grades up. Along with absenteeism, grades can make or break a high schooler’s career and chances of acceptance into college. At Hot Springs County High School, the warning list for grades includes those students carrying a D or F. A student that finds themselves on the warning list can be i...

The Lady Bobcat freshman girls basketball team traveled to Buffalo last weekend for a tournament, taking on Worland, Lovell and Powell, finishing with a 1-2 record. The girls came out strong against the Lady Warriors from Worland and it was a tie game, 23-23, at half time. Coach Katie Despain said the girls were playing aggressive, smart and tough during the first half, but after the half-time break, they were not ready to play as aggressively. They let Worland slip 21 points past them in the...

  • Signs of frostbite

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Jan 11, 2018

Just like water turns to ice, fingers, hands, toes, feet and even your ears and nose can freeze. The phenomenon is known as frostbite and can occur in as little as five minutes in severely frigid weather. Unfortunately, some folks don’t even realize they are getting frostbite until its too late since the area becomes numb. So what do you look for? In the early stages of frostbite the skin turns pale yellow or white and may itch, burn, sting or feel like pins and needles. Once it gets to the i...

  • Do you warm your car up before driving?

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Jan 4, 2018

We’ve been seeing some frigid temperatures each morning and of course, no one wants to get into a cold car, but starting it up and letting it idle may not be the best idea. According to Popular Mechanics, starting your vehicle in the cold and letting it idle may actually be damaging your engine. Internal combustion engines use pistons to compress a mixture of air and vaporized fuel within a cylinder. That mixture is then ignited to create a little controlled explosion that powers your engine. W...

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Jan 4, 2018

The Lady Bobcat JV/freshmen team took on Ft. Washakie just before Christmas break, unfortunately losing a close one, 44-40. Coach Katie Despain said, “Overall, this game was good for our girls to experience. Ft. Washakie came out with two different presses that we were not ready for.” Despain said the girls adapeted well once they understood the strategies needed to break the two presses. Although a close game, it really came down to missed free throws at the end by the Lady Cats. They shot 43... Full story

  • School district absentee rate decreases

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Dec 28, 2017

Studies have shown student absences have a detrimental effect on overall learning and grades. Students who miss a large number of classes are sometimes not able to catch up with their studies, and on a high school level, this can lead to higher drop out rates. At the December meeting of the Hot Springs County School District #1 Board of Directors, data was presented that indicates a generally much lower absentee rate so far this year as compared to last year. Dean of Students Catelyn Deromedi... Full story

  • Ringing in the New Year

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Dec 28, 2017

The biggest party night of the year is coming up on Sunday as people around the world ring out the old year and ring in the new. It should go without saying, however, nearly half of all accidents on New Years Eve and New Years Day are alcohol related, so please, don’t drink and drive. If you have plans to attend a party, pick a designated driver before even leaving home, or have some alternate way to travel if you plan on celebrating. Staying off the roads entirely is a good idea, too, e...

We’ve waited a long time, but the wait is well worth it with the opening of the new Raptors Grill and Pub. What was supposed to be a six-month project turned into almost four years for Tony Nettles and Julie Lehman, owners of the restaurant. According to Lehman, there was trouble almost from the start with inspectors, the State Fire Marshall, electrical inspections and even the Department of Environmental Quality. The building was essentially gutted from the ground up with new floors and a new r...

  • Be fascinated with the world

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Dec 28, 2017

If you’re anything like me, for the last few weeks you’ve been going at full speed, wedging in everything you can, between shopping and concerts to family gatherings and parties with friends. It kind of reminds me of those nights when Cookie and Cupcake decide they’re going to fly through the house at full speed at 3 a.m., sounding more like a herd of elephants than the delicate kitties they are. It usually starts with a little boxing match at the top of the cat tree, then one of them leaps...

  • Lady Cats struggle to find rhythm

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Dec 21, 2017

It was a rough pair of days for the Lady Bobcat basketball team this weekend as they dropped games to Riverton, Lovell and Lander. Friday’s game against Riverton saw the Lady Cats struggling a bit with a 30-53 loss. Coach Cory Sova said Riverton simply shot the ball much better and had nine more offensive rebounds. Having 11 shots blocked or at least deflected didn’t help, either. “It was our worst outing of the year,” Sova said, “and we could get no rhythm or momentum.” McKenna Bomengen ha... Full story
