The Bobcat golf team went over the mountain last Thursday for the Buffalo Invitational Golf Tourney. Coach Joey Johnson said the Buffalo course is the hardest the team has played so far this year and their first day scores reflected that. Hot Springs County School District’s Board of Trustees discussed starting a program for three-year-olds at their meeting last week. Amy Ready, who coordinates the early childhood program for the district, said surveys had been sent out to the caregivers and child care providers in the community to get their feedback on the possible start of such a program. There are, of course, pros and cons to the move, and a big part of the discussion is not wanting to create competition or bad feelings with t...

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Aug 30, 2018

The Hot Springs County Commissioners were informed last week about some issues going on in the jail in regards to maintenance. According to maintenance supervisor Anthony Fruciano, they are starting to have problems with doors and locks in the jail failing pretty regularly. “This is a safety issue for both the employees and the inmates,” Fruciano said. No real, professional maintenance has been done on the doors or locks for years, it has just been the maintenance crew doing what they cou...

  • A smell in the air

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Aug 30, 2018

I could tell this last weekend that there was a touch of fall in the air. Not because it was cooler outside or getting dark a little bit earlier, but because I had the urge to bake. There's nothing like the smell of fresh baked anything, whether its pie, cake, cookies, whatever. So I tried out a new recipe on Sunday for apple pie bites. The premise is an apple pie in a cookie sized bite. There are none left. I was very lucky to grow up in a multi-generational home with a grandmother who taught...

  • Wildlife viewing tips

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Aug 30, 2018

We’re fortunate in Wyoming to be able to see wildlife almost any time we wish, with deer walking down our streets and fields full of antelope just about everywhere, but what if you want even more? Spring and fall, of course, are the best viewing times for all sorts of wildlife, with early mornings and evenings near dusk when animals are feeding or visiting water sources as prime times to see them. In the spring you can see all the new babies and if you return to the same spots, you may get l...

"Each day they are pushing each other to better players and teammates. Its so fun being a coach when you see so much love and passion for the game in your gym...

  • Follow the road rules in school zones

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Aug 30, 2018

Now that the kids are back in school, it might be a good idea to brush up on your knowledge about driving in school zones. Of course, just about everyone is aware of the 20 mph speed limits in school zones, and there are a few of them throughout town to help students get to school safely. However, if you happen to speed through one of those school zones, Wyoming Statute 31-5-301(b)(i) will mean a fine anywhere from $52 to $450 or more, depending on your speed. If you drive through one of the...

Cindy Glasson and Mark Dykes, Reporter Photographer and Editor|Aug 23, 2018

by Cindy Glasson and Mark Dykes The Hot Springs County Commissioners heard the results of the Big Horn Regional Southern Supply Level II Study on Tuesday afternoon which presented some interesting numbers should the town and county switch from surface based water to a well. DOWL and WESTON completed the study, looking at two possible well options, Buffalo Creek Well #2 and the Lysite Mountain Well. In the beginning, there is no doubt the project would be costly, but in the long run, would end up saving residents on their water bill. Jeff...

Things became rather heated at the Hot Springs County Fair board meeting last week as a number of families attended, upset about some things that went on during the Hot Springs County Fair. One of the issues was overweight animals not being allowed in the ring for the final shows. Daniel Webber was very vocal that his son, after taking first place in his division, was told as he was leaving the ring that he could not be in the final show because his animal was overweight. • Teachers making a difference everyday

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Aug 16, 2018

The old joke about the best three things about being a teacher – June, July and August – is pretty outdated these days. No longer do teachers take the summer off, only to return to their classrooms a week or two before classes start to decorate the bulletin boards and make seating charts. These days, teachers spend their time facilitating the summer Lights On programs, providing summer school instruction, working in their classrooms, collaborating with their grade level and content team mem...

  • Thank you for stepping up

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Aug 16, 2018

Most people you talk to will say this political season has been completely exhausting. Yes, it has been exhausting, but it has also been refreshing. Refreshing in that this little community has stepped up their game, coming to the table and not only running for elected offices, but talking openly and honestly about their hopes for the future of Thermopolis and Hot Springs County. It doesn’t matter where you go, you’re going to hear someone talking about this candidate or that one. Dis...

  • Big Springs flows holding steady

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Aug 16, 2018

Of course, the flows change from month to month, some years staying pretty steady, yet others show considerable jumps in the flow as well as marked drops. At the Big Spring itself, flows in January of this year were 1886.66 gpm (gallons per minute),...

Although it was not able to stay here without a hangar, the ownder did fill the p...
