  • A lot to see in a lifetime

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Jun 6, 2019

This week marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the one that allows women the right to vote. Numbers like this always fascinate me. It’s hard for me to grasp that women were given a voice just 44 years before I was born. I grew up knowing I could vote, that my voice would be heard once I reached that magic age of 18. Women stood up, walked out and said “no more” until they were given the rights they deserved. Segregation in our schools ended just nine years...

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Jun 6, 2019

Thirty years ago, youth from across Wyoming attended the first Big Horn Basin Football Camp in Thermopolis under the direction of coaches LeRoy Hayes and Rick Vancleeve. Gary Glenn started the football camp in Riverton as the Central Wyoming Football Camp and when it was time for him to retire, Hayes and Vancleeve “didn’t want to see it die”, and brought it to Thermopolis. This year, the camp will be held June 17-19 at LeRoy Hayes Memorial Field. Registration for the camp can be done onlin...

Dozens of kids and adults gathered in Hot Springs State Park last Saturday for a ferocious Nerf gun fight. Thermopolis Nerf hosted the afternoon of food and fun. “Hides” that the players may take cover behind during the Nerf war were strategically placed between trees so they could run from one to the other, hide and shoot, all while trying to eliminate all their opponents....

  • Property trends in Hot Springs County

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|May 30, 2019

As we look at our small town, often what we notice are the numbers of businesses that are closing. Some would say we have a lot of homes that are vacant or for sale as well. Statistically speaking, we are actually rather stagnant with the number of homes for sale, at least since 2017. For the past two years, the average sale price of homes in Hot Springs County has stayed at $151,200 and in the Town of Thermopolis at $133,600. We’re well below the national average for home prices -- $216,200. T...

  • Use caution when floating river

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|May 30, 2019

Right now, conditions are perfect for floating the Bighorn River even though we haven’t seen the sun for a while, but its always smart to follow a few precautions to ensure you enjoy your day. The river is currently running at about 2,150 cubic feet per second (cfs) which will make your float about three hours long from the Wedding of the Waters to the Eighth Street bridge. Personal flotation devices should be worn by everyone in your group, but are especially important for any children going a...

Tuesday night's meeting with the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the citizens of Hot Springs County had the school auditorium nearly filled to capacity with people wanting to know what is really going on and seeking answers to their questions. Some of those questions were answered during the three-hour meeting, but a lot of other questions were left unanswered. Kevin Fredrick from the DEQ started the public meeting by laying out a few ground rules for the evening and explaining...

  • Be aware

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|May 23, 2019

I was lying on the couch the other night and looked down at my feet. I swear my feet are becoming webbed between my toes. Don’t get me wrong, I love the rain, but it does raise concerns for me when it comes to driving through Wind River Canyon. It hasn’t been that many years ago when we had the enormous slide that covered the road and kept the canyon closed for a few days while they cleaned it up. I know there have been slides in the canyon since the road was chiseled out, but I pay closer att...

  • Fairgrounds concession stand discussed

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|May 23, 2019

Members of the Fair Board met with the Hot Springs County Commissioners on Tuesday afternoon to talk about whether or not they actually need a full, professional kitchen in their new concession stand. After looking over the numbers from their contractor, they determined that a professional kitchen is well out of their budget, but have come up with an alternative that should work well. Once built, the concession stand could be used by different entities with just a temporary permit from the...

Members of the Wyoming Outdoor Council, Worland Conservation District, various Hot Springs County water board members and concerned citizens attended the meeting that answered some questions, but opened up a slew of new ones. In moving through the room asking what those in attendance were most concerned about with the project, the answers were anywhere from the cumulative e...

  • Commissioners updated on courthouse

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|May 9, 2019

All of the maps of Hot Springs County are kept in what are known as plat cabinets in the county clerk’s office for safekeeping. Karen Slocum approached the commissioners at their meeting on Tuesday to let them know the clerk’s office needs a new plat cabinet as all of the others are now full. In addition, the sleeves the current maps are being kept in are starting to create an oily film inside that is degrading the ink on the documents. A new cabinet will cost $4,270 and the sleeves will be $2,...

  • Green is my favorite color

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|May 9, 2019

I know we’re all getting a little tired of the rain, but you cannot beat this time of year when all those showers not only bring flowers, but all of the green that rambles over our red hills. The lawns in Hot Springs State Park are already looking spectacular and a drive through the buffalo pasture shows the green grasses filling in nicely. Of course, that also means we have to find time to mow our own lawns as the rain is definitely making them grow at a ridiculous pace. Finding just the r...
