  • Commissioners get project updates

    Cindy Glasson|Nov 7, 2019

Things are starting to slow down for the season out at the Hot Springs County Airport according to FBO Nate Messenger. Now that spraying is over and most of the fishing season is at an end, Messenger said their fuel sales have dropped a bit, but they still had 116 total operations at the airport during the month of October. Those operations included turbo prop aircraft, twin engine piston aircraft, three helicopters and even four jets along with 40 single engine aircraft. Messenger said they...

  • The choices we make

    Cindy Glasson|Nov 7, 2019

I’m in a rather philosophical mood today. I think it started when I stepped out my back door and my feet flew out from under me and my head cracked on the bottom step. Maybe it jarred something loose. Anyway, I’ve been thinking a lot about the choices we make in life, both the good ones and the bad ones. Of course, at the time, all of our choices seem like good ones. It’s not until later that we realize we could have done something completely different and the outcome may have been amazi...

  • Mayne provides voice for Bobcats

    Cindy Glasson|Nov 7, 2019

What started out as a one-time thing with a bored eighth grader in the stands at a basketball game has turned into a three-year mini "career" for sophomore Hayden Mayne. If you haven't heard yet, Mayne is the teenaged voice of the Bobcats, calling the games using his cell phone so those who can't make the games can still hear them via Facebook. For a time, Mayne was the manager for boys basketball and even did some of their video, but his heart lies in calling the games and he's well on his way...

  • Planning commission approves land change

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Oct 24, 2019

John and Jane Jeffs appeared before the Hot Springs County Planning Commission recently to request a variance of a road easement, a land use change and a preliminary subdivision plat to establish one six-acre lot with a remaining 56-acre property. The property in question is a place just under 63 acres at 1287 Jeffs Road. What they are asking to do is a simple one-lot subdivision of about six-acres which contains their residence. They plan to move an existing guest cabin onto the remaining 56...

He went on to become the assistant...

  • Keeping up with tech

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Oct 24, 2019

I’ve been pretty lucky to be “tech savvy” up to this point. Sure, I’ve had to ask my kids initially how to use all the cool stuff on some of my phone apps, like Snapchat, but for the most part, a little common sense on how stuff works has done me well. Until now. If you’ve ever seen me at a public meeting, you’ve probably noticed I carry around a laptop to take notes on rather than doing it by hand. It’s so convenient for me and besides, I type a lot faster than I write and I can look at whome...

  • Pink Out game takes on special meaning for coach, players

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Oct 24, 2019

If you happened to catch the Bobcat Volleyball team at home last Friday you probably noticed a sea of pink as they played Newcastle in their annual "Pink Out" matches for Breast Cancer Awareness. Coach Shannon Hill said the team came out "not quite ready to play" and dropped the first set, using a new rotation. They came out in sets two and three, though, and played great, winning both to take the game into a fourth set. "I am not quite sure what happened to my girls during the fourth game,"...

  • People for People needs volunteers

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Oct 17, 2019

As we begin gearing up for the holidays we often wonder if there is something we can do to make a difference in someone else’s life. A difference that isn’t just for a single day or a week, but perhaps something that can make a diffserence in their lives for months to come. There are many local charities you can donate to and any number of events in the coming weeks you can attend that will help those around you. One in particular that could really use your help right now is the People for Peo...

  • The pros and cons of chickens in town

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Oct 17, 2019

“I ordered a chicken and an egg from Amazon. Now I’m just waiting to see which one comes first.” Whether or not the Town Council allows chickens within the city limits seems to be a recurring theme on our pages, so maybe its time to take a look at both the pros and the cons of having Chicken Little living next door. No one can deny one of the pros to having your own brood in your backyard is the ability to have fresh eggs just about any time you want them. A fresh egg definitely beats a mass-...

  • Lady Cats to host Newcastle

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Oct 17, 2019

The Lady Bobcat volleyball teams had a really busy week last week with Senior Night last Thursday against Worland and then a quick trip to Glenrock on Saturday for out of town matches, too. Coach Shannon Hill said the girls came out a little flat against Worland, which is pretty typical when it comes to Senior Night when emotions are running high for the seniors. "We made too many errors in the first game, missing five serves," Hill said, "and just couldn't get any runs. We also let Worland go...

  • Hot Springs State Park update

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Oct 10, 2019

The state’s Joint Travel, Recreation, Wildlife and Cultural Resources committee met in Dubois last week where the status of Requests for Proposal (RFP) were discussed in regards to Hot Springs State Park. According to Representative John Winter, there really isn’t a lot to report at this time. RFP’s for both the Days Inn and the Star Plunge have not been finalized nor sent out, and Winter said the committee doesn’t seem to be too worried about getting responses. Winter added there had been no...

  • Love-hate relationship with snow

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Oct 10, 2019

I have something of a love-hate relationship with snow. On one hand, I really don’t like driving in it, something that I’ve noticed has gotten worse as I’ve gotten older. In my younger days it was no problem to hop in the car and head back to college in the midst of a blizzard, following the truck in front of me, navigating the road by following his taillights. Now, though, I put off leaving for any winter road trip until I’ve checked the roads, the weather forecast and had at least three c...

  • County buildings need new roofs

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Oct 3, 2019

The Hot Springs County Commissioners had a discussion with Hot Springs County Airport FBO Nate Messenger regarding whether or not the county should go into another lease for a tractor at the airport. According to Messenger, the price for the lease will be going up next year to $1,600 for 50 hours of use. This year, he said use had been between 45 and 48 hours, so the 50-hour limit would be fine. The commissioners suggested a used tractor, either one just off lease or a newer model, might be...

  • Bringing a community together

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Oct 3, 2019

"It is programs like this that bring the community together. These are the things that make America great. We need more things like this across the country." Those are the words of Michael, a veteran from North Carolina who went on his first antelope hunt this past weekend as part of Hunting with Heroes in Thermopolis. In spite of the cold weather, along with rain and hail, he was very grateful to have gotten the opportunity to come to Wyoming for the hunt. "I had a buddy that told me about the...

  • Rides available to free clinic

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Oct 3, 2019

When someone doesn’t have any form of health insurance it can be difficult to remain healthy. The costs of doctor’s visits, not to mention prescriptions or any kind of health screenings may be way beyond what a person can afford, so they are forced to skip even the most basic healthcare. Through a generous grant from the Episcopal Diocese of Wyoming, Heart Mountain Free Clinic will be extending its services for those in Hot Springs County that do not have health insurance. Their free services in...

  • Lady Cats host action at home

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Oct 3, 2019

The Lady Bobcat volleyball team went over the mountain to Buffalo last Saturday and unfortunately fell to the Lady Buffs in four games; 17-25, 25-22, 15-25 and 19-25. Coach Shannon Hill said the team is struggling right now to find a consistent momentum. “We passed well and played good defense,” Hill said, “we just aren’t puttig balls away consistently, which leads to the other team going on big runs.” Hill says they are playing the ‘catch-up’ game a lot and just playing not to lose rather than...

  • Keeping our teen drivers safe

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Oct 3, 2019

Any parent of a teenager will tell you “they know everything,” whether it’s about politics, climate change, fashion, gun safety or even driver safety, every teen thinks they know it all. As we get ready for the 12th annual Teen Driver Safety Week, Oct. 20-26, here are a few statistics parents can talk with their teens about when it comes to climbing behind the wheel. In 2017 there were 3,255 fatal crashes which involed teen drivers. Car crashes are the leading cause of death among teens. Texti...
