    More than $21,000 was raised last weekend during the annual Relay for Life in Hot Springs State Park. Organizers said the event went very well, and in spite of a bit of wind as things got started, the weather was great overall. Things started off with a dinner for the survivors and their caregivers along with those participating in the relay.     Along with the start of school comes the start of fall athletics for Hot Springs County High School and Thermopolis Middle School. First practices for high school sports begin Monday, Aug. 17.     “Senior Momentum, Use It or Lose It”, was the theme for the 2015 Senior Olympics held in Sheridan, where five Thermopolis residents competed in several events. Gloria Simmons spent her time in the pool, earning a gold medal in the 100 freestyle, 100 side stroke, and 50 side stroke and a silver medal in the 200 freestyle and 25 sidestroke.   • Commissioners discuss fuel, taxes and gravel pit

    The Hot Springs County Commissioners covered a lot of ground during their meeting Monday at the county annex. Applications had been requested recently to fill an unexpired term on the Hot Springs County Library board. In all, five applications from interested citizens were received by the county clerk.     The final valuation for Hot Springs County for tax year 2015 is $230,839,867 according to Hot Springs County Assessor Shelley Deromedi. With that valuation in mind, the Cemetery District, with a mill levy of 1.754, will receive taxes in the amount of $404,893. Hot Springs County Weed and Pest receives two mills, giving them $461,680 for 2015. Total, the special districts for Hot Springs County received $866,573.     A proposed agreement between the Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department and the Hot Springs County Rural Fire District has become a hot issue between the two entities.     Citizens needing to do work in the Hot Springs County Courthouse will find the elevator is currently out of service. Issues with the elevator had been coming more frequently, however, over the weekend it became a safety issue when the elevator began moving too quickly up and down the shaft with no gentle start or stop.     Paul Ward came before the Hot Springs County Planning Commission last week with a request to change a portion of his property from agricultural to industrial. Ward would like to take approximately 14 acres of his land above the irrigation ditch and create a gravel pit.
