With just two tournaments left before State and National Qualifiers, the Bobcat Speech and Debate team had a good showing at the Jackson Tournament last weekend, winning third place in the small schools division. Three members of the team were unable to make the trip due to illness or conflicting engagements, but the remaining six showed they are absolutely ready for the remainder of the season. “Every member of the team made semi-finals with the exception of one,” coach Cindy Glasson said, “an...

The Lady Bobcat basketball team split their time between home and the road last weekend as they dropped a home court game to Rawlins on Friday and an away game to Douglas on Saturday. Friday's game against the Lady Outlaws was a close one, the Cats losing 45-40. Coach Cory Sova said Rawlins hit some big shots throughout the game to keep a slim margin on the scoreboard most of the game. Hot Springs County High School's wrestling team spent Saturday in Greybull at their Memorial Invitational. Cindy Glasson, Reporter & Photographer|Jan 26, 2017

In a deja vu repeat of the 2016 legislative session, Wyoming is once again in the spotlight nationally for House Bill 0135, the non-discrimination act. The bill has been described as a stab at the LGBT community with those opposing the bill saying it removes the rights of the LGBT community in favor of religious preference, spreading real fear among the LGBT community and their supporters. An attempt was made last year to present the bill on the house floor, however, there is a required 2/3...

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter & Photographer|Jan 26, 2017

At their January 17 meeting the Hot Springs County School District Board of Trustees held a lengthy discussion on whether or not to move to a four-day school week for the upcoming 2017-18 school year. Six years ago, when the board decided to move to the 4 1/2 day week, it wasn’t a financial decision, but one based on student absenteeism and a better way to combat it, especially on the high school level. At the time, the majority of missed school days were on Fridays with students p...

  • Reminiscing

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter & Photographer|Jan 26, 2017

Sometimes I sit at my desk here at the Independent Record and try to come up with something to put into this page. Some days ideas come to me very quickly – other days, not so much. With all the snow coming down Tuesday I sat at my desk and stared out the window, waiting once again for inspiration to strike, kind of like lightning, but a lot less painful. I finally gave up and hopped in my car to go take some winter wonderland photos and while driving around that inspiration came to me. I was p...

Some of you may have seen an article making its way across the Internet recently, listing the 50 least educated places in every state. Guess what? The “writer” of the piece has placed Hot Springs County, Wyoming at number 49, inferring there is only one place in the country dumber than us. I put the word writer in quotes, because this kind of journalism is nothing more than someone sitting behind their computer, gathering bits of information from around the web, tossing it all together in a sup...
